"The Tropics of New York" analysis

In the poem "The Tropics of New York," I believe that the author's message was that New York is unlike any other place. I think that the author is trying to say that once you have lived in and experiences true New York, beautiful things outside of New York (such as tropical islands and exotic fruit) do not matter.
